Monday Monday

The monthly staff breakfast this morning went well, I think.  On the menu: yogurt, juice, French toast, eggs, potatoes, sausage, turkey bacon, and fruit salad.  I got quite a few compliments on the fruit salad, which was nice because I spent some time yesterday chopping up everything.  (There was no way I was going to spend $60 on a fruit tray from the caterer when I could do it myself for cheaper!)  I also brought in a thing of banana pudding for folks to eat later after lunch.

I have to say that I was a little miffed that the directors didn't participate in helping with breakfast even though this was breakfast hosted by our departments. So much for a team effort.  :(  No offer to help bring food, get food, or clean up.  I am, however, thankful that the other staff members in the department were there to help out.  A part of me wants to "take the day off" on that day next year so someone else can do the coordinating.

I had a rain cloud over my head for most of the day.  However, my mood perked up when I got into the elevator with a coworker and she said "Thanks for breakfast.  It was really good.  It was probably one of the better ones that we've had here."

Oh, that was nice. :)

I don't think she knew how much I needed to hear that.

Staff Breakfast Planning

I had an awful time going to sleep last night, so I decided to get some rest and not go to spin class this morning.  I instead went to a yardsale at noon and then went to the grocery store to get supplies for the staff breakfast that my team is in charge of for tomorrow.  I got a whole bunch of fruit that was on sale: strawberries, mangoes, peaches and grapes and spent some time chopping everything up.  I also got banana pudding supplies to make a batch to take to the office.

Hopefully that'll put people in a good mood for Monday morning.

On another note, the Sleeping Beauty DVD that I bought a few weekends ago sold for $5.99 earlier tonight. :)

Saturday Yard Sale Slump

I went to a few yard sales today, but either they didn't have what I was looking for or the items the families had were way too overpriced.  A mug for $5?!  No thanks.  A bunch of old "Cars" lego cars for $18.  No thanks to that too.

I did got to the thrift store and found a great black jacket from Talbots for $4.99, so I considered that my score for the day.  I can't wait for the weather to get colder so that I can wear it!

After running around this morning, I took a nap and had the craziest dream.  I had some where to be to meet my boss and instead of going in the morning, I decided to venture out late at night with public transportation.  It was dark and rainy and I had no idea where I was or where I was going.  I got dropped off at the last stop and I started walking in the rain until I saw a bar that was open.  I guess I was thinking this is where I could make a phone call.  I was feeling very uneasy, but then miraculously, when I walked into the bar, Julie and Dad were there.  Whew, I'm saved!  And then I woke up, which was great timing because I could feel my anxiety in my dream.  Definitely not the most refreshing nap ever.

Ebay Sales Update (May and June 2014)

The Vera Bradley laptop bag that I bought for $4 last Sunday sold for $29.99.

I sold a set of 24 DVDs, seasons 1-6 for $23.99.  I wish I had gotten more for them, but oh well, at least they are out of my closet!

I also sold a set of 6 punches that I wasn't using anymore for $9.99

I sold my dad's e-reader that he got as a retirement present.  I used it mostly since Dad got an iPad.  I thought the thing was a piece of junk.  Nothing compared to what an iPad could do.  That went for $9.99 as well.  As long as the buyer is happy with it, that's fine with me!

I also went for a run today...the first road run in a while (maybe more than a year, I'm ashamed to say).  It was a nice weather outside and I didn't want to pass it up.  I also wanted to try out the tracker feature on my Fitbit app.

Fitbit Milestone

I made it to spin class tonight, yay!  I was trying to find a parking spot and I noticed this car.

Let's just take a moment to soak that in.

I mean, really?  Come on.  You couldn't pull all the way through?  I guess it's fine since there were other parking spaces around, but that's not okay.
After spin class, I jumped on the treadmill to get some extra steps in.  I couldn't let Surili be first on my leaderboard for too long.  I switched between Brian Williams, Law and Order: SVU and before I knew it, I cranked out 3 miles on the treadmill with a mix of walking and running.  This was the highest step count I've had so far since I got the Fitbit back at the end of March.

Regular Check-Up Day

I went to work a little late this morning so that I could take RJ to the vet. For some reason, he has no problem going into the crate, but then once he gets into the car, he wails all the way there.  Mom always had to take the crate out a few days in advance so that Ginger wouldn't get spooked.  On the day of, Mom would have to catch her with a towel and toss her in the crate because the cat would know she's onto something.  Fortunately, the vet isn't too far from my house so I wouldn't have to hear the protesting for too long.  There was a misbehaving dog in the vet's office, so he was a little nervous about that.

The worst part was when the vet technician took his temperature.  He tried twice and gave up because of the yowling, so he took RJ to get weighed instead.  14.6 pounds.  Yikes.  The vet didn't comment on his weight, but he had a little tarter buildup.  He's up for a cleaning, so I plan to take him in about 6 weeks.  When I was waiting to pay for the visit, there were 2 other cats waiting for their turn.  One brown/white tabby and one ginger/white tabby.

Before Robyn and Meg came over on Saturday, I went to Safeway to get some fruit and groceries.  I happened to walk by an endcap display and I saw these peanut butter Oreos.  Yum!  Well, they are gone now since we pretty much ate the whole bag while chatting.  I'l definitely be getting another bag for myself or at least to share with my office mates.

Best Yard Sale Finds

Whew, busy day!

I went and got gas for my car this morning and off to yard saling we go!

I went to 2 houses and the one multi-family neighborhood yard sale.  I didn't get anything at the first yard sale.  At the second one, I scored 2 Vera Bradley items for $8 (I asked for a deal; they were originally asking for $10).  One was a jewelry box and one was a laptop bag.  Both were retired patterns and in really good condition.  I can't wait to see what I can get on Ebay for them.  A previous listing of the laptop bag went for $45!
I also got some brand name neckties (Michael Kors, Givenchy, etc.).  Who knows?  Maybe I can make a profit off of them too!

After going to the yard sales, I went home and hoped on Ebay to do some research and started listing some items.  And then I went to the pool to get a workout in!  There were so many non-lap swimmers in the lap lane.  o_0  WTH?  Hello, you have a whole pool to play around in.  Let the lap swimmers have their area too!  I almost said something to the lifeguard, but I decided that it wasn't worth it.

Hard Work Paying Off

My committee chair was in town WED and TH for a meeting. This is her last year as chair, but she'll be staying on for another year to help with the transition. She's been chair for 6 years and I've worked with her the whole time. I don't know anything else. It'll be an adjustment to work with new chair, but she's super nice, so I don't foresee any problems. Anyway, during the lunch break yesterday, she pulled me aside and gave me a gift and card. I was so touched.  I thought it was amusing that she gave me a homemade card instead of one from Hallmark.  She knows that I make cards, so this was a great gesture.  Her note was super sweet too.  I guess all the nagging that I do pays off.  The gift was a necklace with 2 charms on it.  I'm pretty sure I can't wear it because my nickel allergy would flare up, but I can put it on a key chain or something.

Mom and Dad went to celebrate Aunt's birthday this afternoon at Cantler's and were nice enough to bring food back for those that couldn't go.  I got a crabcake platter, yum!

After dinner at my parents' house, I went to get cat food from Petsmart and wander around Target.  I ran into the Director of Contracts from work there.  She was trying to get her son ready for camp.

Treasures from the 90s

Julie forwarded me this Buzzfeed article: 32 Of Your Childhood Toys That Are Worth An Absolute Fortune Now.  That prompted me to go to my parents' house after spin class (4th class this week!) and dig through the basement for some old toys.  We came out with 4 Polly Pockets (only 1 is shown here), a Tamagotchi that needs new batteries, and an Aladdin handheld game that needs new batteries too.  I would say the article is misleading because just because the item is listed at a high price, that doesn't mean that it'll sell at that price.  I'm thinking I'll sell the Aladdin game, but then keep the rest for a little while longer.

Free Book at the Office

A box of Tuesdays with Morrie was in the kitchen this afternoon with a sign that said "Take One."  Ok, sure!

My committee chair was in town today for a meeting tomorrow.  My boss, coworker and I went to lunch with her at Potbelly.  I asked for a roast beef sandwich with extra hot peppers.  My mouth was burning afterwards, but the sandwich was so good!  The chair went back to the hotel to get some work done and the rest of us did the same at the office.  We met up again for happy hour.  $4 Appletini and $5 chicken tenders/fries...yes, please!

Bug Patrol?

It always makes me nervous when I see him do this.  Does he see something in the vents that I should know about or is he just enjoying the cool air?  (We're currently experiencing a heat wave in the DC area)  He already killed a bug earlier tonight...maybe he's on a roll?

Fall-To Layout #294 and Happy Father's Day

I made some Father's Day cards last night for my dad and my uncle using Fall-To Layout #294 as a guide. Flowers were too girly, so I went with some Martha Stewart fruit stickers that I had laying around.
I woke up early and went to the 8:30 AM spin class this morning. Afterwards, I went with my cousins and sisters at Pacci's for brunch.  Mmm, gnocchi, salad, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs. They also had some cheesecake and chocolate cake squares.  After coming home with a full tummy, it was nap time!  I woke up and watched the Sleeping Beauty DVD that I got yesterday at a yard sale to make sure that the film disc was working and it was.  Then it was time for a walk!
Sometimes RJ can put aside his mischievousness and be nice to me...

Run For Roses

Volunteer Activity #4 of 2014:  Another early Saturday morning for me!  This time, I signed up to volunteer at registration for the Run For Roses race: "Run for Roses is a 5K race for women only and part of the Maryland RRCA’s Women’s Distance Festival Series."  One funny thing was that the Human Resources director at work (an avid runner) was volunteering as a course marshal.  By 8:30 AM, I had done my good deed for the day.

Yard sale find: I went to a community yard sale near the race and didn't find much there except for a Sleeping Beauty DVD for Ebay resale.  I had spotted The Lion King and The Little Mermaid DVDs too, but when I opened up the cases, I noticed that the discs with the movies were empty!  Whew, good thing I checked!  Sleeping Beauty was the only complete set.  After going to that yard sale, I stopped by Dunkin Donuts to get some treats for my family (I had a coupon, yay) and stopped my house to get the rest of the banana pudding from the potluck yesterday to share with my sister Julie.  Mmm, donuts.  I got 2 blueberry cake, 2 Boston Cream and 2 strawberry jelly filled.  My cousin was mowing his lawn so he got blueberry and jelly donuts.  Julie was on her way to work so I didn't get to chat with her that long.  I picked up her old microwave since mine is out of commission until the Samsung guy comes to replace the keypad next Friday.
I wondered if I'd see Harry today, but instead, it was Hans that came to visit...to eat Harry's food.  Mom put a lid on the food to keep him out (even though, Hans had eaten half of it already!).  What a jerk.  He clearly has a home since he has a collar, so he doesn't need the food!

When I got home, I took a nice nap and then afterwards I was energize to take a long walk outside.  It was nice to enjoy the weather outside since this past week was very rainy and gross.  I need to soak it up since there's supposed to be a heat wave this upcoming week.

I also did a round of Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones tonight too.
Sorry, Hans.  No food for you.

For She's a Jolly Good Fellow

One of the office's senior directors had her retirement party today.  Despite it being on a Friday (a day that many of us telework) there was a pretty good showing of folks.  Many people also brought stuff in: macaroni and cheese, fried rice, salads (both fruit and vegetable), ice cream (Jennifer's contribution, banana pudding (my contribution), orange and blueberry pound cake, a carrot Indian dessert, brownies, etc.  Yum!  A few of her staff put together a nice memory book with pictures from throughout her career and I think she was really touched by that.  Now, she's going to be hanging out on the beach and periodically doing some consulting for us. What a nice way to close this chapter in her life.
I forgot to mention that on Thursday, I had a surprise present on my desk.  Deborah gave me a magnet as a thank you for lugging some of her clothes to the annual meeting since it wouldn't fit in her suitcase.  I, of course, promptly put it up on my white board at work.

I'm so fancy...

This photo should have "I'm so fancy" by Iggy Azalea playing in the background.
As a side note, I didn't make it to spin class tonight because GoogleMaps was showing bad traffic near the gym. I busted out my Jillian Michaels DVD: No More Trouble Zones and I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't struggle as much as I did the first time.

Empties #3

I saw this shirt at the mall when I went to get a haircut yesterday.  I wanted to get it, but then I wondered when I would be able to wear it since we can't wear shirts with writing on them at work. :(

I've been slowly whittling away at my toiletries closet stockpile.  I have a tendency to bring home those travel sized shampoos, conditioners and lotions from hotels when I travel to work.  After many trips to CDC, my supply spans 2 quart size ziplock bags.  Time to address it.  I tackled the mini lotions and mini toothpastes first. I also went through a thing of Loreal EverStyle.  This is my second tube of this stuff.  I want to repurchase it once I finish a bottle of leave-in conditioner that I'm working on.  I finally finished my tube of candy cane Chapstick.  It came in a pack of 3, so 2 more to go!  The last exciting thing that I finished was a black eyeliner.  I have some other black eyeliners that I'm working through before I repurchase this one.

Comp Day

In a last minute decision, I decided to take the comp day that I earned from working last week's annual meeting.  I've been putting off getting a haircut for a few weeks, and I figured today would be a good day to do it since it's a weekday.  Also, with the summer months, it gets too hot to have really long hair!  Oh, and thanks hairdresser lady.  Yes, I know I have grey hairs. Why do hairdressers have to call attention to them?  Is it some sort of PSA?  It's not like I didn't know. :P

When I got home, I made lunch and noticed that my microwave display had an error message on it.  Noooo!  After doing some internet research on it, it turns out it's a common problem with Samsung microwaves.  Double nooo!  I promptly called customer service to see if I could get a technician to come and repair it. It sounds like I'll be microwave-less for the next few days. :(

Sigh.  Oh well.

So what else did I do on my day off?

Play with makeup!

I redid my nails because the blue China Glaze polish that I used on Sunday just wasn't opaque enough.  I took it off and went with Sally Hansen's I-rish Luck, a new polish that I bought.  It's pretty and very similar to China Glaze's Starboard (oops...).  I also whipped out some of the Loreal Infallible eyeshadows I bought recently and created what turned out to be a dramatic look with them.  Too bad the camera couldn't capture how vibrant the teal color was.  It'd take some guts for me to walk into work with this look on, but it was fun to do anyway.

I went to spin class tonight (third day in a row!).  And then I promptly went to the grocery store to buy banana pudding supplies for Friday's potluck retirement party.

Update on Banana Pudding and Harry the Cat

The internet was down when I got to the office this morning.  Blah, what a start to the week!

The banana pudding that made for work yesterday was a big hit at the office. When I checked on the status of it after lunch there is only a one cookie square worth left. I originally wanted to make cookies for a potluck celebration for directors retirement on Friday but I might change my mind and make pudding instead since the ingredients on sale.

I went to spin class tonight (2 classes in a row now...yay!) and then I went over to my parents house to eat dinner. Their relationship with the homeless cat Harry has improved dramatically over the last couple of months. He doesn't run away when you open the door but instead will come up to you, meow and rub his body against your hand.

Recipe #4 of 2014

I got a whole bunch of bananas leftover from the race yesterday.  I was thinking that I'd make some banana bread, but then when I saw that pudding was on sale at the grocery store, I decided that it was the universe saying that I should try my hand at making banana pudding, as inspired by my recent trip to Little Rock.

Good thing I went to spin class this morning so that I could enjoy scraping the bowl.  This is a dangerous dish to keep at home, so I'm bringing it to the office tomorrow.  Fingers crossed that I bring home an empty tray.

Colleen's BA 5K Race/1 Mile Fun Run

Volunteer Activity #3 of 2014:  I woke up early this morning to work registration at the Colleen's BA 5K Race/1 Mile Fun Run.  It was an event close by and the girl that the run is named after went to my high school (except I graduated 10 years before she did).
Please join us for the first annual Colleen’s BA 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk to benefit the Colleen Mitchel Memorial Fund.  The Fund was established in memory of Colleen Mitchel, who was born with liver disease (biliary atresia or BA) in 1993, had a liver transplant at 7 months old, and died last year at 19 years old from complications due to liver disease, while awaiting another liver transplant. Proceeds from the event will support biliary atresia (BA) research at the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Liver Center in Baltimore, MD.
Anyway, I thought it was a good way to support the community.  Registration was quite busy for such a small race.  After that area died down, they put me on food duty, which was to put grapes, strawberries, and blueberries into little Dixie cups for the runners after they finished the race.

One interesting thing that happened to me was that one of the volunteers came up to me and asked my why I looked familiar.  "Did you work at HRSA?"  No, but I did work at the National Cancer Institute.  A light bulb went off in her head.  We worked together briefly back in 2008!  After she said her name, it clicked for me too.  Wow, small world.

I was only signed up to do registration, but I stuck around to see what other help was needed after the race was over.  People were congregating in the all purpose room and eating the snacks that were provided.  There were brief speeches from Colleen's mom, dad, and doctor.  Race winners were announced, as well as the raffle winners.  Even though I didn't know this family, it was cool to see that her friends and family and school communities wanted to come out and support her.

Post-Race Activities: After the race, I went to visit my parents and my aunt and then took a nice nap back at home. When I woke up, I decided to make a trip to Target and get some gas for the car. I saw on Twitter that some of the NYX butter glosses were on clearance at Target, but I didn't find that that was the case at my Target.  Oh well.  I did get some cereal though, so that the trip would be a complete bust.  I ate a crab cake at my parents' house (they took a trip to Annapolis this afternoon) and then took a walk with Julie to get some Fitbit steps in.  Afterwards I went to get some groceries and picked up a Redbox movie since I had a free rental code.  I ended up getting Thor: The Dark World.  Meh, it was alright.  I'm glad that I didn't spend $10 on it at the movie theater.

New Reading Material

It feels good to get back to normalcy.  When I got home on Wednesday night, I was eager to push the reset button that I did a load of laundry and unpacked before going to bed.  This morning, I went to spin class and it felt good to get a workout in.

For my birthday this year, Suzie got me a subscription to Clean Eating.  I have yet to try any of the recipes, but I'm hoping I can do that this summer.  I already have my eye on a banana pudding recipe that I want to try, as I was inspired by my trip to Little Rock, but that's not anywhere near clean eating.

My Car's First Flat Tire

Blink blink.

What is that noise?!

I thought I was going to be able to sleep in this morning but the HOA folks came in with their lawn mower and trimmers. I guess this was the universe telling me that it was time to go to work.

The office was mostly empty because many of the people that went to the annual meeting decided to take their comp day today.  For any of the folks that went to the meeting and decided to come in anyway, I felt like we looked liked complete zombies because of lack of sleep. The only productive thing I did today was probably filling out my expense report.

I noticed when I was driving home from my parents' house last night that the low tire pressure indicator was lit up. I decided that I would address it after I came home from work today but I realized when I was pulling into the parking lot at home that it was because of an almost flat tire. Nooooo! I thought the tire was just underinflated so I had enough air to get myself to a local gas station. The air machine there was broken and when I went to see if the mechanic could help me out, he informed me that the reason why my tire was flat was because I had driven over a nail. Fortunately, he said that he would be able to fix it for $10. He was able to get me back on the road in about 10 minutes and I was so happy!

When I was unpacking my suitcase I found my badge from this year and I added it to the badges from the two previous meetings that I was at.  It's exciting to see that my role at the meeting has moved up over the years. I thought moderating a session would be scary since I do not like public speaking but it actually wasn't too bad because I wrote down everything that I needed to say and I also came up with questions in case the audience didn't have any for the speakers. It pays to be prepared!

Little Rock, Day 5

Yay, the day is here!  It's just a half day of sessions and then it's time to go home!  At one point, I saw my boss walking away with one of the laboratory directors. "We're taking a walk to the old state house.  Do you want to come along?"  What? What about the session? Why aren't you in the session?, I thought.  "Um, that's okay."  Well, if she's not going to be in a session, I don't have to feel bad that I only want to go to half of it.

For lunch, 4 of us went to the Capital Bar and Grill.  The other 3 girls had the catfish sandwich.  I went the cobb salad.  All 4 of us had a serving of the banana pudding.  Out of everything I ate on this trip, that was the best thing I ate.
We took the hotel shuttle to the airport and it was like being at the annual meeting all over again because everyone was at the airport to get home.  The Little Rock airport wasn't big at all like DCA or ATL, so it's not like there were terminals for people to go to.  My flight was probably a quarter of people from the office.  I approached my seat on the plane and a lady was sitting in it.  "Are you 8C?"  "Yeah, but I wanted to sit with my kid.  You should check with the stewardess back there about your seat."

WTH lady?!  No need to give me an attitude.  Geeze! Don't mess with me.  I've been away from home since Saturday.  I'm tired and I want to go home.  Why don't you tell me where your original seat was so I can sit down?!

"Ok."  (snarl).

A series of muscial chairs happened and the mom with her kids ended up sitting up in first class.  It was all very confusing.  The flight was a little turbulent, but it came into DCA early.  A coworker and her husband drove me to my parents' house where I parked my car.  After chatting with everyone for about an hour, it was probably 10:00 PM when I walked through my own door.

Yay, I'm home!

Little Rock, Day 4

Today was super busy: awards breakfast, a session on legalized marajuana, a session on return on investment, poster presentations, and a session that I had to moderate (my first time!).

I had an oops moment when I was trying to take my poster down from the standing bulletin board. The folding chair that I was standing on was not very stable and I went down.  Fortuantely, I was able to catch myself, but I felt bad because the poster bulletin board almots fell on someone on the other side.  Good thing the posters were in the back of the exhibit hall.  How embarrassing.

One of the vendors was giving out these 3D puzzles.  I saw that my boss had it and I dug in.  I told her I'd have it done by the end of the day and I could give it back to her.  My coworkers were going to a restaurant called Brave New Restaurant, but I decided to camp out in my room and do the 3D puzzle.  I had gone out all the other nights, so I felt like it was okay to be a hermit tonight.
I got the cobb salad from room service and about 45 minutes later, I finished the puzzle.  It was nice to get some vegetagbles after a few days of fried, artery-clogging (but awesome) food.

Little Rock, Day 3

There were sessions this morning, but nothing seemed interesting to me.  I wandered to the meeting around 10:30 AM for a session that I was a runner for.  For lunch, we got boxed lunches in the exhibit hall, so I figured this would be a good opportunity for the committee to sit together.

Tonight's dinner was at Whole Hog.  I arranged for 9 of us to go and we were fortunate that the hotel shuttle could take use since the restaurant was 2 miles from the hotel.  I think everyone had a good time...mostly because we were gossiping about former coworkers.  Geeze, is that horrible?

Some folks wanted to go out afterwards, but I went back to the hotel and walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes. While I've been able to get my steps in during this trip, I felt like I needed to get a work out in and sweat from something other than the humidity outside.

Little Rock, Day 2

Whew, ok, Day 2.  It started out really early with a 7:30 AM breakfast along with a 7:45 AM meeting start time. It was a lot of presentations and some brainstorming.  The consultants did a presentation on a data visualization project that I've been a part of and I wasn't sure how their reaction was going to be, but it seemed positive.  Yay!

I braided my hair this morning and got several compliments on it :)

At breakfast, my boss turns to me.  "Tina, who's that guy that's sitting behind Jenn?" Oh, the Asian guy?  He's the new global health guy.  "Oh, he's cute! (wink wink)."

o_0

...

My committee chair sitting in between us was looking confused.  "Oh, well, one of the things the committee chair has to do is find a guy for Tina." OMG, how embarrassing is this?!  I don't really mind the jokes between just us, but not with members.  Come on!  This is getting old!  Plus, hello, we just took a sexual harassment training at work.  And while they didn't explicitly say no to office romances, it's not really a good idea!  Ughhh.

There was the welcome session and then lunch was on our own.  Because some of us had to move to an overflow hotel, we got $20 gift cards to the conference hotel's Starbucks.  I got a salad and went back to my room to decompress.  Then before I knew it, it was time for hanging up posters and sessions.

I went with 3 coworkers to Flying Fish.  I had walked by it on Saturday, but the line was out the door so we went to Bosco's instead.  I'm glad that we were able to get in line and didn't have to wait too long for our food.  I got the 6 fried shrimp platter.  Michelle wanted the banana pudding and I wanted the fried peach pie.  She suggested that each of us gets one and we can share.  Perfect!  The food was delicious!
Some folks wanted to go out after dinner, but I wanted to go back to my room. I took a shower and when I went to brush my teeth, I noticed that the toothbrush was on the counter! EW! The cleaning lady got rid of the cup that it was in. I don't understand the logic behind that. :( Fortunately, the front desk had a new toothbrush that I could use.  The hotel staff also got rid of the towel I had hanging behind the door.  Hey, I could have used that again!  Why not be green and save some water?
